What is public relations?
.................................................................................................................................................................
Huge books have been written to try and answer this question. The truth is, there is no one answer.
Essentially, public relations is the management of a company's public impact. This could mean an impact on customers, regulators, journalists or investors. With the public becoming increasingly savvy when it comes to advertising and the media, a firm's reputation can be a very valuable asset - and the competitive difference between it and rivals. Public relations aims to maintain and improve an organisation's reputation through careful management of external and internal communications.
PR means different things to different people, and often comes under many different guises. When businesses talk of reputation management, investor relations, corporate communications and customer relations, they are describing different shades of PR.
The CIPR (the UK industry trade body) identifies three central concepts for PR - 'organisations', 'publics' and 'understanding' - with the latter forming the relationship between the first two. That, in a nutshell, is PR.

What is Public Relations Links?
..............................................................................................................
Public Relations Links was set up in 2009 to provide independent information on an industry which employs nearly 50,000 people in the UK and yet remains an enigma to many. After shedding a bit of light on to other sectors with our sites Public Affairs Links and Consultancy Links, we thought it was high time for us to do the same thing for PR.
PR is a massive industry, and one going through a great period of change. As the influence of online social media continues to grow the sector is becoming a different animal with every passing year, with many firms fragmenting whilst others draw together.
Our aim is widen public awareness of what goes on in PR, as well as to provide an invaluable resource for those looking to find out more about the sector. We also want to help out those looking for jobs - and those looking to publicise those vacancies. We have helped graduates and experienced professionals find roles, guided businesses to consultancies and helped educate thousands on the PR industry around the world.
