In response to growing interest in the working of the public relations industry, a number of helpful textbooks have been published to act as a primer for those new to the field. As you would imagine given the academic courses that have been built around PR, a lot of experts have also felt the need to get their thoughts down on paper. Below is a few of the best.

Public Relations for Dummies by Richard Kirshenbaum, Eric Yaverbaum, Robert W. Bly and Ilise Benun  (2006)

Yet another of the ubiquitous Dummies series, this one is actually a predictably corny but effective beginner's guide to public relations. Packed full of information and useful ideas, it is a very good starting point for those new to the field - though experts won't find a lot that's new.

PR in Practice: Effective Writing Skills for Public Relations by John Foster

"Will provide the budding or established PRO with an opportunity to gain a broader understanding of how good PR is created. For those new to PR it emphasises that writing is an invaluable part of the job." PR Week. Others - including one Amazon reviewer - found this work excruciatingly boring, so approach with some caution.

The New Rules of Marketing and PR by David Meerman Scott

Probably the best treatment of the direction PR is taking globally, this book focuses in on new media and how it is changing the world of communications. According to the blurb, it 'shows you how to leverage the potential that Web–based communication offers your business.' Either way, its essential reading for anyone looking to put themselves at the zeitgeist of PR.

For those looking to get a view on new media PR and marketing, some other good works include;

  • The New Influencers by Paul Gillin
  • The Search by John Battelle
  • Now is Gone by Geoff Livingston & Brian Solis
  • Do It Wrong Quickly, How the Web Changes the Old Marketing Rules by Mike Moran
  • Search Engine Marketing Inc by Bill Hunt, Mike Moran
  • The Corporate Blogging Book by Debbie Weil
  • Waiting for Your Cat to Bark by Jeff & Bryan Eisenberg
  • The Eyes Have It by Kevin Lee & Steve Baldwin
  • Duct Tape Marketing by John Jantsch

All these books can be found at Amazon.
